My only sister is 4 foot 11, 5 feet. She is 17 years old, and she won't grow anymore. I am getting taller each day it seems like, and I am 22 years old. My sister can't see over the steering wheel of a car.
I can't even fit into a car.
Why is my sister so short, and I am so tall. And I also weight 280 pounds.

its all about genetics. your sister is short because rather your father or your mother is short. if they are both tall then somewhere in your family someone was short. and thats the same with being tall. i have 4 sisters and 3 brothers. my parents are both tall. but my grandma is short. thats where 3 of my sisters get their shortness from. the rest of my siblings are tall. they get that from one of my parents.

This does not consititute medical advice :-) Go and see your doctor for that ;-) Here's think and can remember on this topic: First and foremost you haven't told us your age which is a very important fact in the matter. It is however difficult to be certain how much growing you will do without doing some investigations. If it bothers you go and see your doctor. When you are growing there's a special area of bone where the growing actually happens called the 'growth plate' because there's calcium in the bone around it and none in the growth plate that shows up as a black area on an xray. There's actually a lot known about which joints tend to fuse first which can be helpful in approximating how much growing people have left to do. It's very hard to be precise about it though. If you do feel you want to have something done about this though go to your doctor sooner rather than later as once the growth plates disappear then doing something about it becomes much much harder (leg lenghening surgery etc is possible but a very lengthy process not to mention having intrinsic risks too). Hope that helps.

The most likely answer is that she got her height genes from the female part of her chromosones and you got yours from the male. Another choices is that she got all the short genes and you got all the tall.
I am 6'3" and usually think of myself as normal - only when some your height stands beside me in an elevator am I reminded how others probably see me.
Besides losing some weight, unless you are very muscular, you should probably be happy with your height. If you wish, look up the tall people's clubs and see if there is a group near you. Not only will you find people as tall as you are (and taller), but you will find tall women to date if you wish and get assistance in saving money on large clothes and otherwise accommodate you.
By the way, my sister is 5'10" and so was my first wife. My 2nd and current wife (22 years) is 5'0".

If you are still growing you might want to consider having your pituitary checked. If there is a problem it could be stimulating your growth hormone and causing you to continue to grow. This is a health problem and is more dangerous than just being tall & not being able to buy clothes off the rack. See your doctor. Rule out Pituitary problems. Why would you be embarrassed that you're tall or that your sister is so short? You are definitely her "big" brother. Seriously though see your doctor and have him rule out any problems.

I'm sure some of your other relatives are short and some are tall, right? My oldest brother is about 6'1 and his kids are taller than him at 6'2 and 6'3. I am 5'4. So, it's normal. My family has a mix of very tall and very short people. My hubby is tall and my dr told us our baby will be very tall too. It's the genes.

Height is nothing to stress about. You know, you do have two parents-you could have gotten your height off one side of the family, while your sister could have gotten her height off the other. I'm really tall too, for a girl-5'9'' to be exact. But anyway, take advantage of your height. Basketball, maybe? Be grateful for what you have.

Genes can do strange things.
You will find a car, keep checking. I feel worse for your sister because she is below average height.
You each need to work on your self esteem. Maybe you can write a funny story about your differences and how they don't affect your love for each other!

I have twin boys who are different heights. Not as dramatically different as you and your sister but still physically so different that I have to tell people they are twins or only we would know.
Genetics is a fascinating area of study ad if you are really interested in understanding why then you might want to start learning something new.

Males are taller than females, at 17 she could still grow more, maybe you ate better, or maybe you have different parents or Marfan syndrome.
