I just picked up the script, and they also gave me Ranitidine .6 ml 2x's a day. I didn't even know the Dr. was calling it in for him. I didn't recieve any info on the drug from the pharmacy, but I looked up that it is zantax for reflux.( he also has reflux) But it said that zantax isn't good for people with abnormal kidneys. And his kidneys has fluid on them....from his urine backing up. Has anyone heard of this? Or have you ever given your child Ranitidine when they had bad kidneys????? Thank you so much!!!!

I went to pick up his amoxicillian, and they gave me the other drug...thats how I knew he had called in another med. I would have called his doc. but it is the weekend. I know the doc knows about his hydronephrosis, obviosly, but I just wanted to know if anyone else ever had a baby with the hydronephrosis, and on the liquid zantax. My son also has a urologist, and my sons ped. went agaisnt the urologist regarding meds and a test the urologist wanted done. The urologist also wants him on a specific drug only for the kidneys, so he doesn't get immune to the antibiotic. The ped. says no. And just increased the antibiotic. The ped. says the drug the urologist wants my son on is dangerous for babies. But the urologist my son has was rated number 1 in dallas. The urologist also isnt in my ins. plan, so I need his ped. to prescribe the med, but he says he would rather my son be on the amoxicillian. And every time I go to this urologist I have to pay out of pocket....but I really like him.

my baby also had hydronephrosis and was on amoxicillan for 7 weeks. They told me it was just a precaution, so she would not get a urinary tract infection. In retrospect, I never would have put her on an antibiotic just as a "precaution". But, she is my first baby and I just did what the doc said. After many ultrasounds the docs decided that she will always have a small amount of fluid on her kidney and that it is normal for her. Anyway, I would definitely call and ask about the zantax and just ask more questions about the need for the amoxicillan. Best of luck!

itsnot specific on what kidney function it could be harmful to...the doc is obviously aware of hisproblemand wouldn't prescribe it if it wasnot necessary. What is strange to me is that your child has been on an antibiotic since birth and at this point i would assume him to be immune the that specific one. I would do as suggested above and get off the computer and seek another doctor for a second opinion.

Your child may or may not have what they mean by renal function impairment. Renal function impairment means you are on the road to dialysis. You have a decreased creatinine clearance. If your child has renal function impairment, the dose would just be decreased. It looks like your child is on a normal pediatric dose. Normal dose is 2 to 4mg per kg per day in divided doses.

Ask your doc. He should be more than happy to answer a important question like that.
