After I dial the phone number and before my friend picks up the phone, will I be notified on the screen that this is a roaming call? Then I could drop the call right away. Thank you!

most phones display a symbol if you are roaming, even if you aren't calling anyone

The roaming isn't the person you're calling, it's where you are calling from. If they are roaming, they can choose not to answer the call so there's no roaming charges.
Most phones will display a small triangle symbol and make a chirp noise when you enter a roaming area.

it depends on what comoany your service is with. most times your phone will either say roaming or it will have an R next to where your service bars are
