Arrhenious had suggested dat H+ ions r free in water when dissolved. But this isn't true. They combine with water to form hydronium ion as follows:
H+ + H2O --->H3O+.

Ions are particles that have had their electrons removed. A hydronium ion is simply hydrogen without electrons.
