Good Question! I drove an 18 wheeler for 10+ years and work at a job now where I drive a "four-wheeler" a lot. Your correct about the red light cameras. They do nothing but raise revenue for the government and increase rear-end accidents. (See some of Pat Bedard's columns in Car and Driver). In my opinion, here are a few ideas....
1) Make driver licenses more difficult to get. Anybody can get a license nowadays with very little training. Better trained people make better drivers.
2) Uniform speed limits. The speed limit should be close to what people drive normally and it should be the same for all vehicles. (with only a handful exceptions)
3)Respect. This would be the hardest to teach and/or learn. Many people have no respect for themselves or other drivers nor do they show show any courtesy.
4) Take care of yourself. You can't control your vehicle and the other person's at the same time. So show respect for the law and exercise courtesy to other drivers. Remember your number 1 goal is to get where your going in one piece. (Not to "teach that guy a lesson").
Doo Doo occurs....but if watch your own driving and pay attention to what your doing, you should be able to dodge the dumbsh**s out there and arrive safely.

People don't really want safer roads.
As soon as someone comes up with an idea or invention to make things safer, somebody else finds a legal loophole or invention to negate it.

Actually red-light cameras are working in some areas....
And something else that could help-- re-testing every so often before license renewals.... unfortunately, elderly drivers are now causing more fatalities than teen drivers....

Not letting immature people drive. It is the idiots making the roads unsafe.
I say you have to pass a common sense maturity test to drive.

seems like we should start with active enforcement of existing laws before we look for new solution. cops nowadays seem to spend most of their day taking rreports and filling out papers. hire enough policemen to enforce laws

Encourage people to drive more carefully and understand their vehicles better. More laws are not the answer.

Do what my family did: TAKE GRANDPA'S KEYS AWAY. We figure we saved at least two lives by doing that. (he's 92 and hasn't driven for 5 years thanks to us.) They'll make you feel bad about it, but it's worth it in the long run.

First get rid of cell phones while you drive.
Second, let us shoot out the tires when we see an idiot driver.
