I have a small city yard (maybe 200 sq ft or less, haven't measured yet) that is badly in need of new grass. I'd like to lay sod. I know you have to dig up old grass, till, roll, etc., but is this something that I should hire someone to do, or can I do it myself on a weekend (renting equipment from Home Depot)? Also, are some types of sod better than others? (I live in Wisconsin).

Definitely measure but that small of a yard can be a DYI project. You basically have the idea of dig up old, till, roll and then put down the new.
I do recommend having a helper for the digging (tiring job). Tilling one person, rolling one person.
I like to add a layer of fresh top soil (quality clean fill will do).
Do not buy the cheapest sod you can find! Around here you get stuff that has been cut out of the ground too long and the outer exposed pieces are dryed out and dying (you get dead patches).
Types of sod?? No types of grass. Talk to a landscaper and look at the different types and choose one you like. Then find a reputible sod dealer to buy from.
Idea, find a place where their laying new sod and go watch as much of the job as you can, learn and ask questions.
have fun and enjoy!

200 sq. ft. isn't bad. I am a landscaper and although I don't lay sod all the time I have had to do 8 or 9 hundred sq. ft. in one day with no problem. You can have the pleasure afterwards of knowing you did it yourself. Sorry, I work in Florida and am not familiar with Wisconsin turfgrasses. Here in FL I've seen guys just spray an area with Roundup and then a week later plop the sod right there on top of the dead vegetation - not the best way but they often get away with it.

It can be a DIY project if you think you can the handle the task of preparing the area to be sod and laying it out,but some may prefer to get a professional to do the task.

I live here in Minnesota.....I say it's a DIY think but maybe a friend could help you lay it down. We seeded our yard and it is the best on the street. So maybe consider seeding it. But you may have to wait or depending on the weather.

What you do I am sure it will turn out great!

You can do it..Mind you it takes a bit of hard work. Nothing you cant do.. Ask the people where the sod comes from what prep work you have to do..Then take it from there..

Have someone else do!!! It's hard, dirty work; dust and grass bits are going to get all over you, in your hair, under your nails, in your clothes. During the summertime in the heat, definitely not a fun task. I'm a big fan of DIY'ing but this job is unpleasant enough it's worth paying someone else.

depends if you have the $$ to hire someone...the most expensive part is the labor..so if you do it yourself/and/or w/ a friend or 2 ...you will save the most $$ and you definately can do in a day or so..esp with a small yard. I would and am going to personally do my lawn myself too!
