those 3 were ok answers but virtual memory is a reference to ram and hard drive space acting as ram, if you have inadequate RAM for your notebook, your system will up the virtual memory by taking a section of the hard drive and using it as virtual RAM, but this in turns lowers overall preformance since the hard drive is now working to store the OS and data and now Fuax RAM. you can simpliy restart your pc if you get the virtual memory is low low warning . A long term solution is to open up your case and replace the current RAM stick with a simliarly sloted and pin set stick but with a higher capcity you really need to invest in a 1 gig stick or 2 512 sticks, but usually if you open your laptop, you void the warrenty, but its worth it
If your running Vista or XP you need 1 gig to really get adequate preformance. cuase the apps you can use can really strain resources, adobe, open office, video games, video playback, maple can be big resouce hogs etc
but if you wanna increase the virtual memory available you can click control , system then go into advanced settings and increase the size available

Virtual memory dumps some of the memory from your chips onto the hard drive. It "swaps" the information back and forth as it's needed. Sometimes the system has been changed or does not allocate enough virtual memory.
Click:
Start
Control Panel
System
Advanced
Performance "Settings"
Advanced
Virtual Memory "Change"
If system managed size is checked off try a custom size. Eg. 1024 mb minimum and 2048 maximum.
If you have enough room on your hard drive, this should solve the problem.

You could be running many unnecessary startup programs that eat up your available RAM then activates your Virtual memory w/c is set too low. Run msconfig and under Startup tab, disable most and just leave the VERY important ones.
