Easy question. When I was 12 years old. Everyone in my family was alive then, and it was a great family. Most of them are dead now. Father, mother, grandmother, have been dead for years. Uncles and aunts are gone.

I went to a terrific grade school, though I didn't know it at the time. I was like a little intellectual sponge, soaking up information at an incredible rate. I was in an advanced class for "smart" kids. We studied stuff that I never saw again until college -- art history, linguistics, marine biology, poetry. The world of ideas opened itself to me, and the local library was church, temple, mosque.

Everything was new to me, and the world was filled with possibilities. Other than taking out the garbage, I had no responsibilities, no burdens. We didn't have much money, but I had everything I wanted. I had fifty cents a week allowance, and I thought I was a king. It was a golden time.

I would give anything to go back in time and experience just one more day, just one more bite of grandma's pie, dad's chili, mom's macaroni and cheese.

After that came the complexities of the teenage years, Vietnam, the pressures of college and career, marriage and divorce, success and failure, self-doubt and depression.

All of this was many years ago, almost fifty years. It may be a trite saying, but you really don't know what you had until it's gone.

I would have to say when I was little and my whole family was together. Before my older sister moved out, before my mom left my dad, before we moved, and before I had to change schools. I would say when I was my happiest is when I was home.

High school years. Its funny how much I thought I hated them back then, but they hold the best memories for me. Especially junior and senior years. I would love to go back again and enjoy some of those times again before the real world kicked in.

This is a cliche answer, but when my babies were born, that was a pretty amazing feeling that nothing has topped yet.
