According to wikipedia, the perihelion (the closest it gets to the sun) distance of Halley's comet is .586 AU (AU = astronomical unit - one astronomical unit is the distance from the earth to the sun - about 93 million miles). This means that Halley's comet got as close as 54 1/2 million miles to the sun.

0.586 AU which is about 87 million kilometers or 54 million miles. Not quite as close as Mercury but closer than Venus.
