I have been wondering how to benchmark my current set up with the games I have. I am aware of the benchmarking software from FutureMark such as 3DMark06 and such but how do I get benchmarks from the games I own such as Half-Life 2 and Doom 3 and FarCry and others. I see game reviewers do it all of the time. How do they do it, is there something in the game I need to unlock or what?

Have not tried the games you indicated but in Company of Heroes, there's a graphics performance test that gives out Avg, Max and Min frame rates. Check out your games' Options menu. You might find something useful in there.

they use frame per second or fps. some games allow you the option to see the fps, others don't. there might be a program for it, i don't know.

they also check the performance by alternating the resolution, and setting high/low performance to compare the fps.
