I question whether the sound is all that similar, but the reasons are clear and rather easy. A crystal glass is set "singing" because the thin glass is vibrating and the open cylinder is tuned by the depth of the water in the bottom.
In a metal can, the air is set vibrating by the breath forming an oscillation (pressure building inside, then escaping) like on a flute or piccolo. The length of the open space inside sets the frequency.
