in war of the worlds (modern version) the aliens used some kind of incenerator on the humans. what was the beam probably made of?

Some type of laser probably, but could be a disruptor beam (that tears atoms apart) or a phaser (you'd have to ask Scotty or Captain Kirk how those work).

the weapon was some sort of heat ray, used lasers to literally cook the person into a fine powder (a lot like cremation...except a lot quicker and a bit more efficiently)

It would be possible for "aliens" to use some kind of technology to destroy humanity but IF the aliens are so advanced as they are supposed to be, their technology would be far too advanced for us to understand SO...no one would probably know what their weapons are made of.
