You need to specify what your actually trying to do, or what purpose this machine would be made for.
Making a desktop machine to rip at CAD software would have different specs to a machine to kick at games.
Both are desktop machines, but both would be configured differently if your talking maximum / ultimate performance.
The performance you get from the machine is then very dependant on the way in which the hardware and software is configured.
The best way of looking at this scenario is to first work out how much money you have to spend. No point going for a four-way quad core with fibre channel striping if all you can afford is an E6320 and SATA II.
One of the other post'ers here is completely right though, any answer your going to get from this query is going to be out of date in about 3 weeks time anyway.
