How was your experience? My daughter just got her beginners and I've gone out with her twice now. I don't know if I'll ever stop being terrified, especially when there is a stop sign or sharp turn.

I've had the experience of teaching a few people how to drive a stick shift/manual car...now thats fun.LOL Usually it was friends who I've taught and I was pretty calm when I taught them but it's funny to see how frustrated, confused and angry they got when learning it. I had to sit back and smile b/c I remember being the same way and thinking I'll never learn it.

Being in the car with a new driver can be a scary experience, especially when its your own kin. One thing I want to point out is this: When you are sitting next to your daughter in the car,it is very important that you try and remain calm and talk to her in a calm manner. If you dont you can make her more anxious than she already is. I'm not saying this to be rude. Im just saying it b/c it can be harmful to a new driver. My mother was one of those mothers who would sit in the passenger seat and hit the "invisible brakes" and gasp and put her hands on the dashboard for no reason at all. Or would constantly point and yell LOOK OUT when something was 500 feet away. Plus a BUNCH of other stuff. She made me an absolute nervous wreck and screwed me up mentally when I was driving for a long time. It took me a long time to become a confident driver.

So whatever you do,you can be terrified, but try not to show it. You can want to push that imaginary brake or grab for that dashboard, but try not to do it. Letting your daughter know that you think shes a good driver will give her the confidence she needs to be a good driver. The more you go out with her,the more reassured you both will be.

*To this day,my mother still has not changed her ways and b/c of it I will not let her in the car with me. Please dont let this happen to you and your child.

I don't mind being in the car with a beginner driver. Since I can't drive for health reasons I'd rather have anyone else behind the wheel than me. The beginners I've been with did very well. The only time I was ever scared with a beginner driver was when I was trying to learn.

LOL ... yeah. My eldest daughter. I actually thought I could teach her to drive in my brand new Grand Am. I was a nervous wreck on the inside but managed to stay calm, cool, and collected, even when she mistook the clutch for the brake while parking in a mall and lurched forward into a vacant store-front window. My first reaction was "Are you okay?". Everyone else was amazed I didn't have a hissy fit. What's the point? It's only a car and as long as no one was hurt. Luckily my insurance covered most of the damages and she paid for the rest of it. Great learning experience ... but to answer your question ... I don't do first drivers well at all.

I've been in the car with a few beginners. The best thing to do is to put yourself in their shoes. And whenever I needed a little comforting I would always tell myself, "Driving is not rocket science and I know this person well enough to know that they a wise enough to look out for their life and the lives of the passengers". Don't worry, you've raised a bright young lady who is responsible enough to handle the vehicle. You have to trust that. Some of your anxiety also probably stems from the fact that you're her mother. And that's okay. It's in your job description. =0) My mom still worries me bananas in the car and I'm pushing 30!

Yes, and don't you think it's strange that teenagers today understand computers and other high tech gadgets are lot quicker than they seem to develop a knack for driving? The first time my daughter got behind the wheel, she nearly ran me right into the ditch. And she didn't even have her permit yet! I'll never do that again, especially since I only have one daughter.

My mother could not ride in the car with me as a beginning driver. Ever. I had to arrange to have neighbors or older friends ride with me because she spent so much time being nervous it made it impossible for me to drive with her. I am now in my 30s and I still won't drive with her as a passenger. She still gets tense and nervous. And my driving record is spotless.

Just relax and ignore who is driving. If you are really uncomfortable, give her practice time with another adult so that she will feel more comfortable in the car, and then you will too.
