Does it show signs of "twisting" off?

Or is it broken off lateraly?

I had a similar mysterious problem, not quite exactly like yours, but from your limited information you give in your question, this is a possibility: if your cars cam pulley broke with a piece of the cam on it, it's very possible that the camshaft itself has broken in two. If that happened, you'll never be able to start the car, irregardless of whether you put the cam pulley back on correctly or not. Pull the valve covers and look and see if the camshaft broke. If it did, more advice is to call a junk yard that specializes in engine parts (they're pretty common),and by a used cam shaft. Bring the old one with you and make sure you got the right size. Offer to buy the journals that hold the camshaft to the head too (but NOT the head itself. I got all of this for $25. And it works perfectly now. Auto store wanted about $200 for a new cam shaft, and to get the journals (i had one that broke along with the camshaft), you have to buy an entire new head, which was like $500---obviously out of the question. So I called the junk yard and got lucky that they had one. I tipped the guy $5 for the good deal, knowing I got such a good bargain.

If the pulley is broken then it ought to harm the cam belt or reason the belt to slip. If that takes position the pistons ought to hit the valves and also you should choose a clean engine. Get it fastened!!!
