I live in NE and we DON'T have to take a drive test for a permit but we DO for a license. We either need to have 50 logged hours of driving time OR Drivers Ed for your license. I'm not sure bout IL but it shouldn't be much different. To find out go get the Illinois Drivers Manual from wherever you can take your test to find out. I sleep by the Nebraska guide (yeah kinda freaky) Hope I helped

No you don't have to take a driving test to get your permit, but you do have to take a written or computerized one. You do not have to take drivers ed at least I am pretty sure, I don't know about IL though. But it does take money off of some peoples insurance. If you do take drivers ed you will not have to take a driving test to get your license.

When I first got my license (1994), Driver's Education wasn't required, but it was strongly recommended. The way the driving tests worked was certain birthdays would have to take a driving test and all the rest wouldn't. That's small-town Iowa for ya.
