My desktop shut down while I was using it and won't start back up. I opened it and it was pretty warm. I'm thinking that my power supply burned out, but I'm worried that other damage was caused? Anyone have this happen to them? It had been making funny noises that last few weeks, but had recently stopped.

Observe the power supply fan when you press the PC's power button. If the fan does not move, PSU is probably dead. If fan spins for a few seconds, PSU could be OK but it is sensing an overload condition and activating the auto shutdown safety feature.

Try running PC w/ bare minimum devices. Detach the HDD, CD drive, FDD and case fans.

If PC does not shutdown and you are able to go to BIOS and PC is stable for 15-20 mins., then one of the devices you detached is defective (shorted). Reinstall devices one at a time to determine defective device.

If bare PC still shuts down immediately, it could be a problem w/ the motherboard. Try running again but now w/ motherboard detached from its mounting and not touching any metal parts of the casing. If PC still shutdowns immediately, motherboard is defective.

The funny noise you heard might have been a cooling fan on your processor heat sink or video card failing also could be a system fan. If the fan failed then something would overheat prompting your computer to automatically shut down to avoid permanent damage you can test this if your computer turns back on after you let it cool and look at the motherboard to see if the fans are all spinning if it doesn't turn back on at all then it is most likely your power supply both of these parts can be replaced at reasonable prices. I doubt it has anything to do with your hard drive this would not affect the computer turning on if it failed

It may also have something to do with temperature. Many motherboards are able to sense if you're computer is running too hot and will automatically shut down. If you have a lot of dust accumulated on the moving parts and vents I'd recommend cleaning those too.

If it doesn't power up at all then yes, it is likely to be the PSU or the fuse.
