Henry wanted to divorce his wife, Catherine of Aragon, so he could marry Anne Boleyn. The Pope wouldn't let him. Henry went his own way, and divorced her anyway. He was excommunicated by the Pope, which means that no legal marriages could be performed, as well as burial ceremonies, etc. Henry helped to start the Anglican Church, naming himself, not the Pope, as the head of it. It is still so today. The Supreme Head of the Church of England is the Queen.
