This Question is asked over and over here at Yahoo. The easiest way to do this is like everyone else has said, read the manual on how to secure your wireless connection.

That said here are the basic steps.

1) Log into your router and enable WEP or WAP encryption.
2) Type in your security key
3) Apply those settings
4) goto the laptop and connect to the wireless signal and it should ask for the security key
5) Type it in and you should be connected.

There are more security measures that can make it harder for other people to connect to your signal, but this should be enough to keep the common neighbor away......

Some of this depends on your internet service provider. Most ISPs that provide wireless modems have a security code to access the modem from a wireless connection. You would have to contact them and find out if they do that.

If they do not use wireless security on thier modems, my suggestion would be to disable wireless broadcast on the modem (if possible) and get a wireless router. Linksys makes a good wireless system that is easy to set up and can be easily secured. Not to mention they have very good step by step setup instructions that includes how to secure the network.

As mentioned above, turning on security on your wireless modem (and subsequently on the "network connection" you set up on your PC) will help.

Another thing to check on (don't be afraid to ask your wireless modem manufacturer for help!!) is to turn off broadcasting of your network name. This is also done on the wireless modem and usually the option is something like "disable broadcast of SSID.

With the network name "hidden", regular people like your neighbors (hopefully) won't be able to see a network to connect to. With data encryption enabled in security, it is sort of like having a password that another computer must know before it can connect to your network. Both help to provide a more secure wireless envirnment.

Specific instructions depend on your wireless modem, and in all cases should not be answered in this forum so as to help "retard" some people who might be hacking.

Please see the manufacturer's site for your wireless modem as they should provide instructions for setting up your network.

There is also another option available if you see something like "Easy Secure Wireless Setup" or some such thing on your desktop. This will help setup the security code on the wireless router and your computer. I really don't remember if it is something delivered with Windows or if it is something delivered on a CD with your wireless router.

Hope this helps.

Yes - and so does your manual. Pop it open and read the words on the pages. Enable WPA and do not broadcast your SSID.

Enable encryption, use WPA as its more secure than WEP.
