i'm sure it is in all 50 states. I live in Oklahoma and work in a family drug court program. We get clients whose babies are removed from the mother in the hospital because the baby tests positive for drugs. sometimes they do the heel prick on the baby and sometimes they will test the waste products of the baby (poop) right after it is born to test for drugs. Certain drugs stay in the baby's waste longer than in the blood. For instance, a mother could use certain drugs prior to 1-2 months before birth and they will show up as positive in the baby's waste. We had a mother that hadn't used in over 2 months, but the drug was still in the baby's waste that was present when the baby was born. Child protective services took the baby and the mother went through drug court before she could get the baby. She had to be sober and test clean in the program for a year. The baby's waste is called something, but i can't recall what the doctors call it. It starts with an "m" I believe. does anyone out there know what I'm talking about?

According to the chart I found, yes, there is mandatory drug testing of newborns in Illinois.
Also, this question was asked before. Here's a link to answers.

Hard to tell. Different states treat this differently. I was actually surprised to see how much government intrusion is now occurring in the lives and decisions of pregnant women. While there needs to be intervention for some women, imagine if your blood sample was the one misread? Happens about 10% of the time. That's one in 10 ladies.

I work in a hospital and have for 4 years. They automatically draw blood when she comes in and they do every test on her. If it is her blood then they will check the baby. They call children services and a advocate comes out to talk to her. They will probably take the baby away, or place it in the custody of another family member until she goes to drug counceling or has a hearing determining custody. And if she knew she was pregnant and still put her baby in that situation then she should be punished, and the baby should be put somewhere safe. If she smoked while she was pregnant, what makes you think she will stop when the baby is born, that baby will be raised around drugs if it isnt taken away.

People that just piss me off! for us mothers who have done everything correctly done nothing to harm our babies and it is sick, or has an problem at birth or even worse we miss carry or have it still born. Damn straight your frined should loose her baby. But she probably wont her baby will come out healthy as an ox, go home and lay in the floor covered in a pissy diaper why her mom gets stoned, and then tries to breast feed. And she probably only stopped smoking becuase she knew she would be tested. she will probably go and spend $40 on that miricle tea that flushes out your system. But however I pray that it dont work and there is THC in her system so her child can grow up with people that love it because if the mother did this why the child was inside of her womb who the hell knows what she will do after!

Yes, she should be worried they'll take her baby. And they should take it rightfully so. The worst thing you can do when pregnant is drugs and alcohol.
If for some crazy reason she is able to keep her kid, chances are she'll be sitting around smoking weed getting her baby all contact high.... what kind of life is that for a baby?
She should have sought help if she knew she couldn't quit, for her babies sake.

it should be taken away from her if she wants to be that selfish to smoke weed.
she should smoke it on her own tiem and a risk to her own health not her un born child's health.
what kind of mother is she? the baby should be taking away if it is going to have a drug addict for a mother.
