i have a motorolla razr that lets me set a different ringtone for each contact so i can decide whether it's worth getting up or not ;)
every cellphone i've owned had that function though, another motorolla and an LG. I think all new ones do these days. You just have to go under each contact and change that ring individually. You can also download different ringtones and I'm sure there is a way to record a ringtone with someone's name or better yet record your friends voice, you'd have to google it. It's really easy to get used to different rings though. I've got a huge contact list and I recognize each ring every time.

Most of the newer phones that have music options have individual ringtone options. My phone is the Cingular LG CU400 and all the people that call me on a regular basis have their own ring tone. The best part is that you can download so many ringtones that you can pick their favorite song, or anything that makes you think of them, it's great.

My LG VX 4650 can be set so each person in my address/phone book can have a different ringtone.
Check your owners manual or go on line for the phone you plan on buying to see if you can look At the owners users guide.
My phone can also be set to:"an ounce mode" like a talking caller ID.

on my phone you can program a different ring tone for each caller, and also set it so their picture comes up on the monitor when they are calling....but there's also caller ID. I think all those features are pretty common on newer phones.
