I take it as a term of respect. The art of politeness and proper etiquette is slowing dying off if you think by being called sir, or maam it's a sign you are ready for the rocking chair & lap-robe LOL !!

I've been called "maam" before. But I respect that because it's a change from what everyone else keeps telling me: "Awww you're soo adorable, you don't even look your age!!"
When that person called me "maam", I was like..."yay!"

I'm only 20 and I get called "ma'am" all the time at work. I have a professional job, so I expect it and am never offended. Oh, and teenagers working at Chick-Fil-A and the like tend to call me "ma'am" as well. But, hey, it's better than other things they could call me. And I'm comfortable with my appearance. :)

I only cringe when the person calling me "Ma'am" is older than me. I actually prefer Madam, but no one EVER says that. Generally, I like being treated with respect.

Respect it....because I always refer to anyone not in my age group with those starters just to let them know that I am showing respect . Several people have asked me why I do it. Only because I was brought up that way.

I hated it with a passion when I was younger, but after the age of 25 I learned to take it with a grain of salt.

That is a sign of respect....I have taught my kids to always address adults in this manner. I don't feel old, even if I am!
