I replace mine with about 1/8 "left an the pad. You can remove a wheel and look at the pads to check how much pad is left.If they look thin change them before you eat a rotor with the backing plate.

When they're worn out.
You could get 4,000 miles or 45,000 miles. It all depends on the type of driving you do.
City driving, highway driving, flat ground, lots of hills, do you ride your brakes with your left foot? Do you have quality brake pads and rotors, or cheapies?

Have the brakes checked every 30,000 miles, that way you should be safe and they can estimate how much life they have left in them.
