I rarely lie but if I feel I have to it is to protect myself. If I am at the point where lying seems to be the best option than it might as well be in my best interest. I am the one that pays for the consequence I should be the won to reap the "benefit" of lying.

Other people. Definitely other people. I have nothing but my freedom or reputation to lose. If someone who had a family or a lot to lose committed what I considered justifiable homicide, I'd probably confess to the crime myself just to get them out of it.
