Yes, still using them (at work). I recently had trouble getting the files off of one because the metal thing is bent on one side, and has loosened up a bit. Any idea on how to retrieve those files? I was able to force it in the drive, but it was asking me to reformat which I believe will erase the files. Please help!

It is possible that you have no chance without professional data recovery options which tend to cost a lot of money.

The only suggestons that I have are:
-Trying Isobuster. You can get it from the link below. It is a program that amazed me when it could read what was on a CD when Windows repeatedly wouldn't recognise the CD. I think it might work with floppy disks too.
-If that fails then to try it in another floppy drive or many others. You just might get it.

Good luck.

First get the disk out of the drive and look at the back of it. Make sure the slide is set to the lock position, that way your sure not to format the disk.

You'll need to make sure the metal slide is moving freely, you should not have to force it into the drive.

You can run CHKDSK A: at a command prompt, it may provide additional information about the problem with the disk. If CHKDSK suggests to run the command again with the /F switch, wait because it will attempt to write to the disk.

Go to www,ontrack.com and download the free version of Ontrack Easy Recovery. * It will not recover any files but at least it will tell you if it can. At least that way you can determine if you need to go any further.

There are other free file recovery programs, but you'll need to know if you can recover anything first.

My luck has been about 2 in 10 when it comes to floppies, good luck.

If by metal thing, you mean the cover that slides open... just peel it off the disk and go without it. Then make a copy of the disk on another disk. (I have a couple hundred you can have)

If the metal disk in the center of the disk is bent. Carefully snap apart the case and remove the disk from within. Even more carefully, pry open another disk case and remove its disk. Practice on the empty disk- peel the mylar disk away from the metal hub. Then do the same with the disk with the damaged hub. Attach the mylar disk with the data onto the good metal hub and reassemble it into the good case.

Again, make a duplicate onto a new intact disk.

If the disk is still unreadable, download DISK INVESTIGATOR and try to collect info from that. Disk Inv. saved my info for me once.

Just tear the metal thing off of the disk. It will not hurt the disk or the files held within.
