GREED.

Somebody wants what someone else has, and they will kill to get it.

Religion is the excuse, for the thief to steal from the victim, and just like when you are mad at someone, you look for the insult that will hurt most, the victim hates the religion of the thief.

A good example is Ireland and England. The Irish hated the English back when both countries were Catholic because England colonized and oppressed Ireland.

The same is true of the West and Islam. If we didn't interfere in their politics on behalf of our businesses, they wouldn't give a rat's *** about us anymore than we care about what people do in India or Mongolia.

Religion is just an excuse for those that want power. These people would use any number of things to obtain their agenda

True religious people use their religion to bring them closer to others. Most major religions preach "love they neighbor" but extremists twist it.

Probably not but it is just one of many excuses. People who hate will always find a reason to be divided.

Only hard-core fundamentalists are worse. They tell people that everyone around them must convert to their beliefs or they cannot associate with them. The problem is then they start to develop an "Us" and "Them" mentality which fuels animosity and misunderstandings to the point where they eventually start fighting each other.

How about greed, power, territory, nationalism. Often religion is used as an emotional excuse to cover for one of these. It is easier to get people to fight and die for their god than to tell them you want them to fight and die for an oil field.
