I'm English but there are a group of big of British people on this page who get a dig in at Americans on every question. It just brings shame on our country and makes us look spiteful and aloof. Why do you keep doing it?

Oh come on, it's not just Americans. We have a dig at everybody, even our closest friends, heck, especially our closest friends. You can't talk about any region in England without a stereotype cropping up. Easy, cheap Essex Girls, Aggressive, leery Scousers, Snooty, snobby Southerners, the list is endless. And I'm not even going into what we think of the Scots, Welsh and Irish, so our friends across the pond will not escape. We call them Yanks, they call us Limeys. Fair enough.

In the end we all know that stereotypes are just that, an exaggerated idea of a culture with a tiny grain of truth in it that easily gets lost. We all know that not all Americans are the same. I happen to think that there are lots of good, hardworking, environmentally responsible, honest, Americans out there, that are not racist and xenophobic.

It's just a shame none of them are in the White House.

It's difficult to say as those two questions posted could have a lot of variables - such as the type of person on that particular forum at that time. Bearing in mind the different in time zones too, you may have got the sensible mothers in America, or the drunken mothers in the UK! I do think there may be a connection with your area. I find that there does seem to be a difference not just in what part of the UK, but say.. which part of London, a city or town or village etc. I now live in the edge of a town, and I'v found a HUGE difference in parenting attitudes to the city I am used to. I even notice a difference between the estate I'm on and the next one. Immediately local to me is the sensible approach - less tv, more focus on nutrition and educational activities etc - and a little further away you'll find the other end of the scale. I'm not saying these women are bad mothers, they have a different approach. I do have a friend who couldn't understand why I was so determined to breastfeed (formula is 'just as good'), why I bothered with 'gross' cloth nappies, why I won't put my child into daycare (seeing as we're now entitled to some government funding for it!!), and why I make all of their food (well, most of it) from scratch. She's actually a lovely woman and her daughter is adorable, but I guess that she was raised to believe that her way is the right way, or the normal way. Parenting for me is seeing beyond the norm, not following the crowd. Let's face it - as Brits we are notoriosly rude, in poor health, our crime stats are through the roof, ASBO levels rising, very eco-UNfriendly, and addicted to tv. The 'norm' is not working for the most of us. I'm not sure that the attitudes really differ between Americans and Brts - but another of our character flaws is simply to agree with people for the sake of an easy life - American's seem to be far more open than us. I'm betting a lot of the people who read your friend's UK question secretly thought that she was... less than perfect shall we say - but it's almost in our nature to simply say, 'yes, you're right!'. If it helps, I'm actually Scottish, so perhaps I'm not quite as overly-polite as English! I try to be polite at least...

I've never made digs at Americans on this site, but now you come to mention it I was less than impressed with the attitude some of them had to tips when I went there last year. I always give good tips, here and in USA, but some of them pointedly looked at tips that were the equivalent of many hours work for me and either scowled or looked down their noses. I'm going to harden myself when I go back at the end of the year - if they can scowl at a good tip they can still scowl at less. This probably is not what you were getting at, but I was very disappointed with their attitudes. I had been led to believe that they were genuine friendly people, and was surprised at what I found.

Most are OK, sadly they tend to get the jip for the sins of their country. But if the English were as bad as Hollywood would like people to think, american prisons would be choc full rather than the <.2%.

Why do birds fly upside down over the UK?
Because there is nothing worth pooping on...
Only kidding, England is great. I think Brits poke fun at us Americans in general because its funny.
It is like picking on a younger sibling.
