Vista hasn't been long out. With any new operating system that comes out there have always been teething troubles. It can take a little time for programs, hardware drivers and games to get fixes so they will work again. For some programs and hardware that time never comes. If you have some older programs or hardware that you want to use then it is more likely Vista will be a problem. If however you will only be using up to date programs then your likelyhood of running into a problem will be minimised.
The other thing is the operating system being so new means that people are still finding issues with it that Microsoft will iron out over time through Windows updates. Fewer people are as up on Vista to have a quick fix for many of the problems people have so support isn't as widespread and knowledgable either.
Despite this the flaws aren't usually that bad and it does look good and as long as you get a decent system (I have seen too many entry level systems with Vista that are just so slow out of the box).

If you so wished you could format the drive and put Windows XP on if you bought it. It would be better if someone who knew about installing all the device drivers and software back again was doing it if you felt it was a daunting task.

Although Vista is the current Microsoft operating system it will be many years before many home users and businesses adopt Vista. Windows XP will be supported by software/hardware producers for a long time yet - many years. They would lose too big a slice of the market if they didn't. You could get XP just now and get Vista later as an upgrade if you wished.

I am a consultant and deals with lots of business users, this is my short negative on Vista.
Interface, its too different from 2000/XP, Microsoft cant expect someone whom been using them for 10 years to suddently change the way they work, in exchnage for a toy like interface.
Hardware. A lot of hardware doesnt work, Dell sold a printer 6 months before Vista launched, and now Dell doesnt even have a drivers for Vista, customer with scanners doesnt work, no drivers, Blackberry problem, Vista caused one blackberry to reset totally, losing all data on it.

Downgrade:
You cant just down to XP from any Vista, Vista Home Prem and Basic has no downgrade path, so you need to buy a full copy, yet, almost 80% PC are sold with these two versions.

Overall, I would stay with XP until at least the hardware supports are there.

Vista is a problem if you were using a modem on your previous computer that won't be compatible with Vista. Many are not. The BT Voyager 100 and 105 are not compatable for example and BT were not interested in helping me. BT even tried to flog me an £89 wireless router to solve the problem. The next day I was told by a shop assistant in Curries that she had experienced the same problem and BT sent her a wireless router absolutely free.

I have Vista and it appears Dell did not load it properly on your computer. They have great customer service, probably the best support in the industry. They will do everything possible to satisfy you as opposed to HP which makes and never delivers any services and doesn't think things through at all.

If dimsums is correct, then that is something new, as all previous MS software has included a downgrade option. You are free to use any previous version of an application or OS if you own a more recent one. So if you can't do that with Vista, they've moved the goalposts.

Vista becomes a problem the moment you buy it. The Operating System is very expensive, insufficient drivers available, bugs, more bugs. Altogether higher priced equipment to reach and maintain Microsofts standards. So on and so on.

If you have an XP disc,i guess that would be ok but vista seem to be giving problems with various programs, even networks, ante virus applications and wireless network set ups.I expect probs will be smoothed out eventually.

Yes is the simple anwser but you will need all the driver for your computer windows xp has most them built in but it is not sure thing, you will also loose all the free software that came with your machine as all the software is usually built into the restore disc.
