Subtract 17/6 from both side in order to solve for t, you get;
t +(17/6) -(17/6)= 9 - (17/6)
Working the above out you would get
t= = 9 - (17/6) = 6.167 or 37/6
Edit: it seems esoltchr1275 above me have got the question confused with 9 = (6/17)t, at which point multiplying both sides by 17/6 will certainly solve for t and give you the answer t= 51/2. However that is not the case here, and her answer is incorrect. (No offense nor injury intended towards esoltchr1275, just wish to clearify things in case confusion arose.)

Hi :) Great question! :)
Here's the problem ...
9 = t + 17/6
Simply multiply both sides by 17/6
(17/6) 9 = t + 17/6 (17/6)
Now you have t by itself ...
You can cancel the 6 & 9 by dividing both by 3 ...
You'll get 17/2 (3) = t
Now multiply straight across ...
51/2 = t
Hope this helps :)

9=t +17/6
9-17/6=t
54/6-17/6=t
37/6=t
6 1/6=t
