I would go as far as my pet was willing to fight, and I have. I look at the situation based on the quality of thier life, risk of surgery, etc. I have had tumors removed from rats, leg aputated from a degu(that cost a bundle).
I have also PTS rats that had tumors, if I feel the surgery would be too much for them, or the after care. When emergencies come up I usually decide by asking myself "If it didn't cost anything, would I do it?"

I don't have a limit on the worth of my pets. Yes, I would take out loans. The only factor I would consider is that usually when things are getting that expensive one needs to look at the quality of life for the animal and consider whether it is more kind to put it to sleep.

My dog's lives are priceless.
My cats are special, but not priceless.
I can't state a single limit on vet bills to save my dogs' lives. One has had expensive surgery and I learned that you have to evaluate each situation separately. You have to consider the age and what the dog is and does to make that decision.
If my dog was really old, I wouldn't put out the money for major medical expenses. For a young, extremely active guardian, it's hard to not do the surgery. So it just depends on the dog and the situation.

In the past three years, we've spent almost $10,000. He is my baby, and real estate has been good to us, so we had the money. However, if the same issues were to come up again, we would seek alternative therapies, or be more open to considering putting him down. This is the only dog I will ever do that to and for. He's my little king, and I wasn't ready to let him go so soon. (He had just come into my life.) But he's doing wonderfully well, for now, and it has all been worth it.

I would do whatever it took. But I would want to look at quality of life for my pet. So many new options out there like chemo therapy acupunture for pets... carts for animals who have lost the use of their legs or broken their backs..

It took me 2 years to pay off the loan for my cat's cancer treatment. No, he didn't survive. I don't regret it. At least I gave him the chance. I don't like Nedra's answer because she finds certain genera of animals more valuable than others. I hope her family doesn't feel that way about her. "You know she's special, but what the ****! My son is more important and the money goes for him."

i would do anything to keep my pets happy but it depends if the pet is sick or dying. If my pet is dying and keeping it alive would be painful for it, i would say id have to put it down for their sake and so they wouldnt have to suffer any longer.

i'm not going to lie to you. It really depends. If it was a hamster, rabbit, or guineapig or something like that, then no. I would put it to sleep : ( If it was like a dog, cat, or horse, then I would spend all that I had.
