I know it involves 3D figures. I am wanting to open them in an editor.

you more specifiacally need autodesk 3d studio max and you might need the latest version depending on when you acquired the 3ds file, because some files are not backwards compatible with older versions example 3ds max 9 .3ds files dont open on 3ds max 7 but they do on 8 a full featured trial can be found at www.autodesk.com and support can be found in many 3d forum on how to use it, a good one would be www.3dburnout.com its a pretty good and helpful little community of modelers whihc mostly run 3ds max as well.
