Is it possible for a player to make a first at bat appearance later on in the baseball game? Even if they were not in the lineup early in the game?

There are three ways a player may enter the game in which they were not in the starting lineup:
1. As a pinch-hitter (batting in place of another teammate);
2. As a pinch-runner (replacing a teammate on the base paths);
3. And as a defensive replacement out in the field (this counts for all positions including the pitcher).

this can also happen with out it actually being a pinch hit appearance. a player can take over for another as a defensive replacement and then appear as hitter when that spot in the batting order comes around again(as many as 3 innings later).

A batter can make his first at bat later on in a game if he is a pinch hitter. He can be substituted in later on in the game for another player, normally a pitcher.

If I'm reading this right, then Yes, either by being inserted as a pinch-hitter, or by being put in as a defensive substitute (including as relief pitcher) and then having his slot in the batting order come up again.

Happens all the time.
