I'm 50 years old, African-American, and overweight. I have an MA in English-Creative Writing (since 2003) and experience as a clerical/office worker in the publishing and music fields, and as a tutor/teacher (non-accredited) in higher education. I had bad experiences with employment agencies in my 20s in the 1970s when I had a BA (in journalism), and later I read about how racist they are. Have things changed? I need to make more money, but I'm gunshy about employment agencies.

The Jonathan's answer is definitely not what I'm looking for, yet he unwittingly brings up two important points--which I'll elaborate upon after I get more answers (practical answers, I hope!).

You should make good use of your academic credentials and your experience in the education field. Since you are worried about "race" and "age", why not become an online tutor. Then you won't have to meet face-to-face with anyone. Your work hours will be flexible. Anf you'll have a worlwide market of potential students. Try some online tutoring sites like:

(1) http://www.tuitionplaza.com/tutoring/

(2) http://www.tutor.com

(3) ... and many more (use search engine!).

Think outside the box and you'll have more options.

in the experience that they were telling you that you're overqualified, i'd be susceptible to believe you-the actual shown truth that they say that you're below qualified exhibits that age would no longer be the project right here. What sorts of positions are you interviewing for, and what's your heritage? I personal a staffing business organization, and that i should be prepared to envision out your resume for you and talk your heritage-per chance we may be able to get to the muse of the project.

Old and black, eh?? Not a problem!!

My advice to you, is to find an agency that offers jobs in shoe-shining or tending to elevators. Or maybe tap-dancing. (Wait, if your overweight, that could be a problem)
