Basic knitting is relatively easy to pick up. You just have to practice at it to become good. There are only two stitches Knits and Purls. Everything comes from those stitches. Learning from another person is the best way but, if your good w/ diagrams try to find a basic book or learntoknit.com/instructions_kn.php3
Good luck : )

Go to www.knittinghelp.com ---they have videos on how to cast on, knit, purl and bind off. Also if you're able, check out books that teach kids to knit--Pictures are wonderful and instructions are well written. Kids Knit is a good book.
DVDs are another resource. Nici McNally has a good one.
Try learning with a smooth type yarn. Lion Brand is alright for learning! No novelty fun fur or fuzzy. Also do get the shorter needles. The really long ones are hard to manuever.
Good Luck!

Find a teacher, a book, or a website that gives instruction. Check out the supplies list for a simple project and go purchase them. If you can get it, Red Heart Classic or Super Saver (same yarn, different size skein) is the best to learn on. It can be undone very easily to fix mistakes, for one thing, and doesn't tangle badly. It's also inexpensive, so if you really kill your first project, you can buy more and try again! Be sure to get a lighter color for your first project. If you start with a dark one, it's very hard to see what you're doing! Black, navy, hunter, maroon, purple, etc, should be saved for your next project. Check the yarn wrapper for the size needles you'll need. If you don't understand the lingo on the wrapper yet, politely ask a salesclerk to help you find the right ones.

The easiest way is to ask someone you know to teach you. Books help if you can follow the instruction (which I can't :( ), but it is easy enough to learn if someone can show you the basics :) Best of luck.
