Calculate 40% of £500 say:-
(40/100) x 500 = 40 x 5 = 200
Answer is £200
However there are other ways:-
(40/100) x 500 = 2 / 5 x 500 = 2 x 100 = 200
Answer is again £200
Yet another method:-
(40/100) x 500 = 20000 / 100 = 200
Answer is again £200
Hope you find a method that suits.

If you have the total number, mulitply it by the decimal form of the percent. In this case that is 0.40, so multiply the total number by 0.40.
All percent problems can be solved if you use the following proportion:
%/100 = part/total
In this case you would have:
40/100 = x/[the total number]. If you cross mulitply and solve for x, you will get the same answer that you found by the first method I showed you. The nice thing about the proportions method is that you can use it whenever you have a percent problem -- even if you are given the part and asked to find the total.

A good way to do this in your head is to divide the number by 10, this will give you 10 percent, then you multiply the answer by 4 to get 40 %. Hope this helps!

% means divided by 100 so 40%=40/100 or 0.4 or 2/5.
"of" in this context means multiplied by. Ex 40% of 300 is
0.4*300=120.
