it's safer to travel by plane than any other mode of travel. Is this because the plane is least likely to crash than any other mode, or because the odds of surviving a plane crash are higher than any other mode of travel?

Seems to me that the odds of survival in a plane crash are usually pretty slim.

There is no 'safer' way to drive or 'safer' vehicles, if it's time for somebody to die they will have a car accident, they will have a plane crash where they don't survive. If it's your time, you'll go. If it's not, you'll live.
