Just for the record, I am not thinking of keeping one as a pet, I am just curious (and apparently a bad reader of wiki articles).

The article cited below tells a lot of information about the red fox, including its territory. In a large section about territory, part of it says,

"Territory: The size of an animal's territory is largely determined by the distribution of resources across the area, while group size is determined by the average level of resources. Consequently, territory size and group size may vary independently.

There is tremendous variation in home ranges in foxes. Rural foxes commonly have territories between two and six square-kilometres (200 to 600 hectares), extending up to 40 km2 (4000 ha) in the Scottish Highlands.

Urban foxes tend to forage over smaller areas, less than 0.6 km2 (one-quarter of a square-mile). The territory is usually composed of two sub-territories; a smaller (4 km2) area exists around the den which is defended against intruding foxes and the remaining region that a fox will range over, which may overlap with other fox territories."

Territories may be as large as 50 square kilometres (19 square miles); ranges are much smaller (<12 square kilometres (4.6 square miles)) in habitats with abundant food sources, however.
