You could use a moon cup, which is a small plastic container that can go inside you like a tampon.
If you're on the pill you can continue your pill straight onto the next pack and skip your period but check with your doctor first, you might not be on a pill where you can do that.
If you have trouble using tampons, get the smallest size tampon, use a bit of vaseline as a lubricant on the tip or use the applicator variety. Make sure you RELAX your muscles, I couldn't use tampons til I was 15 because I was always anxious and would tighten up when I tried to use them. If your body is relaxed and there is enough blood flow it will go in easy.

There are several alternatives that you can use and they should be fine for swimming:
There's a variety of "cups" that all work pretty much the same way
Instead Softcup: http://softcup.com/
The Keeper: http://thekeeper.com/
The Diva Cup: http://divacup.com/
The Moon Cup: http://www.mooncup.co.uk/
Or you can try a different type or natural tampon called a sea sponge, but this needs you to be pretty comfortable with your body: http://onewoman.com/redspot/sponge.html
If you are on the pill you can check with your doctor about just continuing with the active pills in your next pack, but not all pills are good for you to do this, so ask the Dr first.
And if you've never used a tampon before and decide you will try, choose the smallest size and be sure to insert it as far up as you can before you push the plunger up. (or use a bit of Vaseline if it is an OB), but be sure to relax, that's really the key.
Good Luck

Wear a tampon if you are swimming and are on your period.
Get the most slender tampon and try it out. It may take a while but relax, use a mirror if you have to.

Not really. But don't be afraid of tampons - when you get older they will be your best friend, and you will wonder how you ever stood to use a dirty nasty pad. Trust me, and it doesn't hurt - so nothing to be scared of.
