does anyone know a good substitute for an engraver? Do you think a dremel would work?

Absolutely, a Dremel can do many more things an engraver can't....carve, cut, drill, engrave, shape, polish, and on and on.

I have used a dremel with a fine-tipped bit for engraving. Practice on some scrap first, it takes a bit of getting used to; it's a different motion and feel in your hand from any engraver I ever used.
Good luck!

Dremel makes an inexpensive 'engraver' tool. It comes with one metal tip. I bought one last week for $15.00 at a local hardware store. I use it to engrave on metal. It does take a little getting used to. If you use it too long your hand will go numb...has quite a bit of vibration, but is a great tool.

Depends on the material you plan to work on !!

I use a scriber (dental pick) on plastic and a Dremel on both plastic, metals and woods.
