The cars are 1930s vintage.
The opening song "Big Rock Candy Mountain" recorded by Harry McClintock was popular during the 30s.
The blowhard politician is based on "Pappy" McDaniel who was Governor of Texas during that time period.
Also, note the gangster character "Baby Face." Definitely a reference to "Baby Face Nelson" who was active during that time.
