It's official title was The Bureau of Refugees, Freemen and Abandoned Lands, but was shorted to Freedmen's Bureau. It was established by the War Department on March 3, 1865. Its main goal was to help freed slaves in any way possible. It set up public schools and oversaw labor contracts, so that freed slaves would get a fair deal. They had to be sure they would get paid not just get room and board. They also got medicine, rations and clothing as well.
