The last answer is mostly right, but not quite. He was write on the fact that Core Duos are 32 bit and Core 2 Duos are 64 bit. All Core Duos have 2Mb cache, but some Core 2 Duos has 2 while others have 4. If the model number is T5*** is has 2 cache, if it is T7*** then it has 4. Overall the Core 2 Duo has better architecture, and will outperform the Core Duos.

The Core Duo is a 32bit processor with a 2mb cache per cpu.

The Core 2 Duo supports 64bit architecture and has 4mb cache per cpu.

To put it simple: it gets more instructions done per clock cycle; a 1.8ghz core 2 duo is faster than a regular 2.0ghz core duo.
