a good bike to start with would be a smaller size bike. For example go to this website and it will show a good bike for you,
http://www.suzukicycles.com/Products/DR200SEK7/Default.aspx

For a "dual-sport" I would recommend a Suzuki V-Strom 650cc. Especially starting to learn it is a bike you should be able to grow with power-wise and sizewise. My buddy, about same dimensions you described, had bought one 2 years ago, loves commutting on it. Has put about 2600 miles on it so far, with only trouble being had to retourque suspension screws from dealer bout bike. With the engine size being below 1000cc, was able to save a couple hundred a year on insurance. Would also recommend taking a motorcycle riding course to aid in safety and lowering insurance costs. I more prefer a street bike, as to which I have a Yamaha R6(600cc), but it has more than enough power to get in trouble with. 500cc-600cc range would be good starter engine size, whether go 4 cylnder or dual cylinder motor. Most twin cylinder bikes might impose more vibration than 4 cylinder, just as sidenote. To save a little more on price, might consider shopping for a good used bike with low mileage, couple years old. Important to note is the type of riding plan on doing, and go to a couple dealers that will let you sit on the bike to try feel. International motorcycle show is a great place for getting feel for different bikes and personal feel, without all the dealer stalking. Choose well, and God Bless.

I disagree with the 250 for your size. I started on a Kawasaki 636 as a very green beginner - 5'6" 155 pound female. I had never ridden and bought my bike one week after taking the DMV's motorcycle class.
Hope this helps!
Whatever your choice, be careful and enjoy the ride.

Get something you will enjoy riding when you finish learning, I mean dont buy a 450 to learn on cause you will want to ride on the highway later and can;'t keep up. you can learn on a 750cc or 1100cc just as easy as the small ones. It will be ready for you when you are ready.
