I have a 96 Chevy Tahoe with 116,000 miles on it. One thing that has always bothered me since I bought the car last October is the gas guage. When I accelerate, the gas guage moves up and when I brake it goes down. It's getting to be like a quarter of a tank each time. When the car is off, it moves back up again. I know that some movement is normal, but is this much normal? The fuel pump was replaced at 96,000 miles. My uncle thinks that I should replace my sending unit, and that will make the gauge dead on accurate. I ran out of gas last week, and when I was waiting around for my friend to bring me some gas, the gauge moved back up to 1/4 of a tank. And I know it didn't have that if i ran out of gas... Do you have any suggestions? I would really need to get this taken care of because I don't want to have to rely on the odometer full time. I would like a gas gauge that works properly. Thank you.

I drive a 91 Chevy 2500 and it does the same damn thing.
With the old fuel pump, and the new fuel pump. (5 months ago)

There is a plastic chamber in the center of the tank where the pump and sending unit is located.

That chamber traps fuel when you accelerate so as not to draw air as the fuel sloshes backward.

Basicaly, there's not much you can do about it. That's just the way it is.

The sender is part of the fuel pump. They put a pump with a cheap sender in.
