If Al Franken said that, he was simply copying Michael Savage - a conservative radio talk show host. He wrote a best selling book called "Liberalism is a Mental Disorder".

Franken is a hack as is any other political commentator that used to be a comedian. They might be good comedians, but they are almost always totally wrong in the world of politics. They just use their fame and speaking ability to get back into the spotlight after their comedy career dries up.

I don't know the context of your quote, but to be it seems to illustrate my point exactly. Instead of coming up with an original observation about politics, Franken simply makes a parody of someone else's observation. Just another comedy routine under the guise of something more serious...

It depends on whether they're real conservtives who actually care about family values or the fony ones who say they're conservative just to gain public influence, deception, and votes.
