First off...no!
I'm not even quite sure where to start with all they why's!

12 x 5 tank is under 2 gallons. You didn't give the third dimension so I can't be sure exactly what you've got. One goldfish needs 10 gallons minimum. They get to be very large and MESSY fish. They put a huge amount of bioload into your tank from decaying food, urine, feces and just plain exhaling through their gills.

Next...a betta needs a heater. A goldfish requires NO heater. Bettas are tropical fish and goldfish are coldwater fish.

Bettas max out at 3" and are very slow moving with that ornate tail of theirs. Goldfish will attack it once the goldfish is large enough and will most likely eat all the food before your betta can even get a nibble.

Bettas are carnivores and have different feeding requirements than the omnivore goldfish. But the goldfish will beat the betta to dinner every single time.

No fish should live without a filter, not even a betta. Most of those tiny tanks have built in underground filters.

I'm not sure what you have in there now..the betta or the goldfish. If it's the goldfish, upgrade to a 10 gallon tank with a good filter. If it's the betta, add a way to keep the water at around 78 degrees. Sometimes this can be accomplished just by leaving the light on for 10 hours a day in those tiny one piece aquariums. If you have a small heater, you could add an African dwarf frog to the aquarium with the betta. If not, you could add a snail for company.

If it's the goldfish, move him ASAP to a 10 gallon. You could possibly add a few white cloud minnows to the tank as friends.

Forget one inch rules - they don't apply to any fish but something the size of a neon tetra.

These fish have different temperature requirements. They could be put together, in a large enough tank, but one of them wouldn't be very happy. Goldfish prefer cool water - around 65-70 is good, but they'll do okay at temperatures up to about 75. They can tolerate warmer, but will need to have something to supply oxygen to the water - a filter or airstone to move the water so oxygen at the surface will be spread through the tank. They should have a filter in any tank to help clean the water - they're messy fish.

The betta is a tropical fish. They're best at temperatures from 75-85o. They can survive outside this range, but will not eat or move much.

The goldfish is also a big ammonia producer that can grow over a foot long. The amount of ammonia they can produce, especially in a small tank, isn't good for either of them. And the goldfish will outgrow the size of the tank you have, even though he might be small now.

Betta and goldfish should not be saved interior an identical tank. right this is why.... Betta are tropical fish wanting temps ranging between 72 and eighty 5 ranges F. Goldfish are coldwater fish wanting temps ranging between 60 and seventy 5 ranges. Goldfish additionally produce vast quantities of ammonia which maximum fish, which contain bettas, does not tolerate properly. Bettas and goldfish might additionally be incompatible through aggression themes. What do you think approximately a brilliant tank? A single "fancy" goldfish demands a tank of a minimum of 10 gallons - 20 gallons or greater is much greater effectual. The tank for the goldfish additionally needs to be heavily filtered. Bettas ought to ideally be saved in a tank with a heater and clear out. whether bettas have a labyrinth organ permitting them to respire promptly from the air, the clear out will save the water fit which in turn will help ward off your bettas from contracting ailment brought about via undesirable water chemistry. A single betta might get exhilaration from a 2.5 gallon tank with some stay or silk flora. In a 5 gallon tank, you could save a male betta with an African Dwarf Frog or a pair of tropical fish as long as those fish are not getting longer than a pair of inches and don't have long, flowing fins. it is achieveable to maintain a male betta with a girl, yet you may elect a minimum of a 10 gallon tank that's heavily planted and "tiered" so as that the two fish have their very own territories and hiding spots. i myself do no longer advise protecting adult males and girls jointly until you're a betta "expert" as protecting those fish jointly demands experienced handling. yet you mustn't save goldfish and bettas jointly through water chemistry and temperature themes reported until now. good luck.

HI male Betta's are the ones you should keep alone. I have a female Betta in with a lot of different fish like guppies, frogs, tetra, platys. and snails. And they all get a long great. Goldfish do not need a heater. Gold fish like the temps cooler than a lot of fish do. And I believe a female Betta would be better off with a heater. I also have kept 2 female Betta's in the same tank and they did great. But DON'T keep a male in with a male Betta they fight. I have kept a male and female together and they also got a long. I have heard that your not suppose to kept male and female together maybe mine with just different. Hope this helps good luck

Well for one thing it depends if its a boy or girl B/c the males are aggresive. Some people say they will go good together but mabey they are just saying that cause they have a girl and its not aggresive. The girl bettas are littler and their fins arnt as fluffy.

Long story short if its a girl yes if its a boy no.

Also make sure your goldfish is not aggressive. I had these BIG goldfish and the would attack eachother.i dont know if was over a girl or what but make sure both are calm. You might even want to put there bowls next to each other and see how the betta reacts.

no both goldfish and bettas are agressive-they'll fight until one of them is dead if you want a tank mate for a betta try something smaller and not colorful like a snail, an african dwarf frog, or if the tank was big enough then a few danios would be nice...remember one inch of fish per one gallon of water in the tank.....I suggest having a heater and a cleaning filter at the very least if you give the betta a tank mate

Do not put your betta in with any fish it will be threatened by. Nothing with flashy colors or large fins. However I wouldn't suggest you keep your betta in with any fish at all, for the goldfish's sake.
