Tornado Safety

What YOU Can Do Before the Storm:

* Develop a plan for you and your family for home, work, school and when outdoors.
* Have frequent drills.
* Know the county/parish in which you live, and keep a highway map nearby to follow storm movement from weather bulletins.
* Have a NOAA Weather Radio with a warning alarm tone and battery back-up to receive warnings.
* Listen to radio and television for information.
* If planning a trip outdoors, listen to the latest forecasts and take necessary action if threatening weather is possible.

If a Warning is issued or if threatening weather approaches:

* In a home or building, move to a pre-designated shelter, such as a basement.
* If an underground shelter is not available, move to an interior room or hallway on the lowest floor and get under a sturdy piece of furniture.
* Stay away from windows.
* Get out of automobiles.
* Do not try to outrun a tornado in your car; instead, leave it immediately.
* Mobile homes, even if tied down, offer little protection from tornadoes and should be abandoned.

Go into a STURDY center room of your house with pillows, a radio, and some supplies. Hide in the bathtub in a bathroom, or in the little closet under a stairway, or even a hallway in the MIDDLE of the house.

"The safest place to be is underground, or as low to the ground as possible, and away from all windows. If you do not have a basement, consider an interior hallway or room on the lowest floor. Putting as many walls as you can between you and the outside will provide additional protection. Less than 2 percent of all tornadoes are powerful enough to completely destroy a sturdy building. Make sure there are no windows or glass doors in your safe place and keep this place uncluttered. Consider having your tornado safe place reinforced."

Go to an interior hall or a large closet and put a mattress or large pile of cushions on your head. The most important thing is that you are in a place that has four interior walls.

Also, if your house has a crawl space under it that is big enough to get into easily (i.e. your house is not sitting on a concrete slab foundation), then that might be another good place to go.

Having said that, if you are in a mobile home , even if it is tied down with hurricane anchors and has a room or closet that has four interior walls, it would be better to lie flat in a ditch somewhere than to ride the storm out in a trailer (even a double-wide with a brick underskirting). Just be sure the ditch doesn't fill up with water while you are in it!

When I was in elementary school we did our tornado drills in the gym or hallway. Less windows. Take a look at your home and find the room in your house with minimal windows. For example my bathroom or laundry room would be idea. A bathroom would be great. Just lay as flat as possible in the tub. In the laundry room it is about as close as a basement as you can get. Just remember to get in the fetal position with your hands behind your head and stay down!

Interior Hallways or interior Closets. Bathtub and lay a matress over you if your driving get out and lay flat as you can in a ditch.

Go to a room that doesn't have any walls on the outside of the house, maybe your bathroom, get in the bathtub and cover yourself with a mattress. GOOD LUCK, hope we hear from you again.
