I live in a dark land where tortuously slow dial up is the only internet option available. No ISP is willing to come out here. there are free hot spots 10 or 20 miles away and I could drive to them, but that severely limits the times that I can get on simply because I can't drive to the next town late at night and I'm working all day. Are there sweet designs for Wi-Fi antennas that will hit those downtown hot spots from 10-20 miles away with little or no signal loss? Are there antennas that I can buy that will pick up signal from that range? I just want to tell Bellsouth "Here's a spoon, enjoy your dial up". Can I use the plumbing of my house as an antenna? It's copper. How about my house's electrical wiring? What about the grid? That would rock! I'm desperate and I would have to move to get internet. Can I sue my ISP for being happy to keep us in the last century? Any suggestions?

Thanks

Well I am going to be different... what is between you and those hot spots. If it is flat ground and basically line of site you might be able to get a connection. (You will have to talk to one of those operators but hey thats not too hard.)

Point to point on wifi has been used at 55miles (ok it was on a hilltop to a hilltop but it was 55miles). You wont be able to build equipment that good you need to get premade but they are available -- not off the shelf at your local store but they are easy to accquire. I run a WISP and we have customers 8 miles with no major issues. (some closer have problems - it all depends on the blocks between you)

Check out http://tranzeo.com or http://defactowireless.com or
http://echotechwireless.com you will find some fairy nifty long distance gear designed for long haul wifi. Tranzeo has just released a couple of new point to point units that really are outstanding.

The reason you will need to talk to the hotspot owners is they have to have one unit aimed at you for these to work. The units aren't cheap they run 300-600 each but then they will work! If none of the hotspots want to do this why not become the ISP for your local area? Then you have high speed and so do your neighbors.

Sorry, there is nothing that will let you get a wifi connection from that far away.

As for suing, i dont think so.

I can only see two option besides moving for you.

1) If you are able to get cell phone service were you live then goto your cell phone provider and ask about 3G internet service. Basically they transmit an internet connection on the same towers as cell signals. They will sell you a wifi card ti install in your computer and you would have to subscribe to their service and Boom, your on. Most cell companies are providing the 3G service so it a good possibility you can get it were you are.

2) Satalite TV Internet Service. The Dish and Direct TV, same parent company now, both have internet services. Check them out.......

10 Mile Wifi Antenna

No, wifi is very hard to accsess when you are fairly close. If you can budget it, walmart sells Belkin wireless routers for just under $30. All you do is plug in an ethernet cable and it instantly puts out a signal. It works great in fact I am typing this on my mohone using the routers signal! If you have a DROID, there are a couple of different settings and all you need to do is connect your phone to your computer via USB. Hope all works out well!

Lawsuit... probably not. Look for an Ambulance Chaser.

10 miles is very far for a local free hotspot. You usually get less than a half-mile of coverage.

First, check your Cable TV company for High Speed Internet

Second, check your Phone Company for DSL

Third, try high speed satellite at http://www.hughesnet.com

Then check the CELL PHONE companies for wireless service. It's slower, but it will work faster than dial-up. Try http://www.t-mobile.com and look at the signal strength on their COVERAGE maps.

Good luck and Happy Computing!

Hi,
Sorry to tell you but I live on a hill above a small town and can only get a link about 0.75K away, so 10 Miles forget it.

You'll be lucky to access WiFi only 300' away!
The only real choice you have is satellite broadband. There is one outfit that offers it for $49.95/month.

No, there isn't an antenna that'll work. Satellite internet might just be your best friend. http://www.getisp.info/satellite-internet.html
