Visit Staples or Costco at their retail store. These retailers do TWO things. First, they show you great products. Second, they have a NO HASSLE return policy, so if you don't like it... TAKE IT BACK.

Look at their Toshiba laptops. but you are probably going to spend about $900.

You see, if you just buy on-line, you have NO IDEA what you are looking at. See a laptop computer IN PERSON. It is foolish to buy something that you don't know about on-line... then wonder where you went wrong. That's why retail stores have NOT gone out of business. But for the satisfaction and help, it is well work spending a lousy $20 more.

You are probably going to buy an AMD or Centrino M. These cost less, but perform fairly well. You see, Costco and STAPLES don't really want to lose money by selling you JUNK. Other retailers and on-line sellers really give you a HASSLE on returns.

Good luck and Happy Computing!

Laptops
don't go for Dell, Hp. Compaq, Gateway, they are just box movers, their support is poor,

that leaves but a few to look at now do your own research into what's left,

as for desktops have your own built by a local computer shop, service will be better, should it go down, and you won't have far to take it back, and it won't be away for weeks, normally a local shop will have it repaired in a couple of days,

CPU's if your going to buy a computer have on built for tomorrow not today... in other wards go for the core 2/3 processor, 64 bit system

celeron m (mobile CPU)

Next advice, don't have windows installed on it, save yourself a bundle of cash.. do some research into Linux,, with Linux you get the operating system for free, plus all the software you will ever ever need,

Like I have advised you on a computer for tomorrow Linux is the future operating system all for free.... do some research into Linux

all the box movers are going to start installing Linux on their systems starting this year,,,
check out the websites below for a free copy of Linux. download ubuntu, 7.4 live cd. you can run it from the cd without installing it, you can even get on the internet, from the cd if you have broadband internet, it will find all your hardware and install the drivers, and if your buying a new computer there is a 64 bit version of Linux also,

unbuntu is the best and easiest Linux out to day.
support is second to none, running Linux is the same as having a mac computer... both run under Unix. you can do more with Linux than you will ever do with windows Vista....

In my opinion, get one of these:
Lenovo (IBM), HP/Compaq, Dell

The Celeron Processor is Intel"s low end..(cheap processor). You can likely get by with it, but dont expect great performance.

The Pentium Duo is much better, but rather pricey.

A good alternative is an AMD processor. AMD has a small market share in a market dominated by intel. Most Pro's go with AMD as it tends to be much bigger bang for the buck than Intel.

More importantly, consider the software. Dell has announced the inclusion of "Feisty Fawn" on its models. This open source Linux operating system is far superior to Microsoft's empty promises and glitzy advertising. You can even try Feisty Fawn, live, for free, at www.kubuntu.org. If you dont think it is better than Microsoft Windows, you can always throw Microsoft $200-$399 and they will be glad to sell you a CD that costs them 20cents.

the celeron m is the most basic intel processor for laptops, if you can afford it go for a core 2 duo processor, at least a gig of memory and a 100 gig hard drivem this will be more than enough for your needs, check out toshiba , they are very good quality and good value for money. my sister got a new toshiba a135 with the above specs and 120 gb hard drive for $600 a few weeks ago, a real good deal i thought. personally i would look out for one still running xp instead of vista, it is more stable and has no compatibility issues that vista has and you can get xp machines cheaper as they are seen as "old stock" by the shops, i got a sony vaio and got it $400 cheaper than the same model with vista and i wanted the xp so it suited me well

Just go online and check Dell, Gateway, Lenovo, and HP (altho I would never buy a HP anything)
Try Emachines also
Try Acer

All of them are made in China. Not too much difference in any of them.
