I haven't bought a laptop before and was thinking of buying one. I dont have much money so is there any place I could buy one used but in good condition? Also, what kind of things should I look for before buying it? And whats the difference betwen a laptop and a notebook? which is better? sorry for all the questions. Thanks for your help!

I just need it for general stuff like college work. Nothing serious. And I was hoping under 300$.

Notebook is smaller, generally, laptop is a bit bigger (and heavier).

As for which is better, depends on what you need.

Can't recommend one without knowing what you plan to use it for and where and how much and all that.

Some local stores may have used / refurbished ones on sale. I've seen some P3 laptops that used to be on sale locally in a computer recycler shop, but I'm in the SF Bay Area. Your local availability will vary. Those are good for typing and running old programs and such.

fl_gator: Craigslist has been in operation since 1995. That's not "new" by any stretch of imagination.

laptop ist just another word for notebook. All in all the notebook should have good technical stats as a normal PC would have plus components which are made especially for notebooks ("intel Centrino" or "AMD Mobile/Turion" processor and "nVidia go" graphics for example). You should ask a real person who has a bit knowledge of computer hardware (in your family?) to find a good used laptop. I would suggest buying an new "obsolescent model" laptop rather than a used one.

laptop and notebook are just different names for the same item, they are both the same thing

ok laptop and notebook are the same terms.
basically you should answer one question what you want youe laptop to do for you.

there are few good brand names like toshina, hp, acer.

Ask yourself how much $$ are you willing to ivest into that laptop. and how much money you want to save.
